What a great week it has been with these kids! The house feels so empty without these happy boys and girls. Nonetheless we had a fun-filled last day, heading into Ronciglione, we met a friend on the way! 15 well behaved English speakers made quite a spectacle for the locals! The children enjoyed a snack in a local bar and then we hit the shops! Once the family gifts were bought, we headed to lunch - a stylish affair of course! Then it was a wander through town and up the hill before the parents arrived and we all had to say goodbye. At The Hazelhut we are lucky to always have fun-loving, polite and kind children, but this group has been extra special and we are missing their smiles and joy tonight - come back soon!

We were very lucky that the sky had clouded over a little and there was a bit of wind, because the fish were definitely nibbling today - the Hazelhutters landed a total of more than 65!!!! Most children caught tiddlers, but one pair landed a whopper! No one really wanted to stop for lunch because they were having so much fun, but we all enjoyed some pasta and home-made sausages. Back at the Hazelhut, some lovely children helped bake treats for the mums and dads tomorrow. The wind was calm enough for us to stay outdoors all evening, learn some survival skills and also enjoy a camp fire 'party'! It's hard to believe this is our last night together.... This is one group we would welcome back again and again!
The rain poured down today (at last!!!!), bringing a well-needed soaking to the plants and lots of creativity to our Hazelhutters..... We tried to have our snack outside during a break in the clouds, but the rain soon returned.... We had to have an indoor picnic for lunch too, but no one seemed to mind. Then in the afternoon the sun was back and the temperature rose once more, so lots of the children wanted to swim and we finished off the sports day with 'hopping on a lilo' and the breath-holding test. The kids had been doing some music in the morning and then we all got together for a karaoke session, when the weather changed again! There were some great songs and even better singers. We all had so much fun, the time ran away from us! Before we knew it, the wind had started to rage and it was time for.... pizza!
Despite the heat we all enjoyed our day with the horses. There were some other children there too, but as usual the Hazelhutters shone for their great manners and positive attitudes. Look what great cowboys and girls we have here! Lunch was very healthy and it was great to get a seat in the shade, to rest and have a chat. One of our afternoon activities was a scavenger treasure hunt in 2 teams. The children seemed to enjoy hiding from each other as much as the hunt! Of course these clever things solved the clue and found the hiding place to reveal the treasure! Before dinner we did a big quiz in 2 teams. What a great end to a fab day!
Everyone needed a good feed in order to start crazy Olympics in form. We did some normal things like penalty kicks, ![]() but also team sports and 'catapulting a wheelbarrow' (?) as well as an old favourite.... apple thwacking! The children were very grown up and all made their own sandwiches for lunch, which we enjoyed in the shade! In the afternoon we tried to stay out of the sun doing different things. But it was quite clear that the kids couldn't wait for a real cool off in the pool. A very healthy day was had by all - plenty of sport, water and delicious fruits in many forms....
We have had a fantastic beginning to the 2017 summer camps with these 15 awesome kids. The Hazelhut home-cooked lunch went down a treat, but the kids were far more excited about the new football pitch..... ....and cooling off in the pool! The enormous watermelon was also a big hit. Each of the children chose their Hazelhut stick from James. These were for warding off wild animals, testing the water depth in rivers and toasting a sausage over a campfire however.... ....boys will be boys! It didn't take long for James to get everyone in order and then we headed off to see the Hazelhut grounds. Later the girls did some sewing, and the boys soon got involved in the art room too. But which group do you think helped lay the table most? - the boys: surprise! We are so happy to have these amazing kids with us for a whole week and can't wait to share the fun with you, but we couldn't resist ending our first blog with the obligatory first dinner picture!
