With an extra hour in their Hazelhut weekend, the children packed in as much fun as they could today. Once they had breakfasted and sorted their rooms, they were quick to start playing games again. But there was also work to be done, so at 10 am we set off to plant bulbs. The children found lots of places for a splash of colour to brighten our spring days. They certainly earned all those roast chestnuts at snack time! We also worked in the art room today making trick or treat bags and cat masks. Everyone was thrilled with Sunday lunch..... some children even enjoyed the cabbage we picked yesterday! After lunch we finished homework and enjoyed some free time. Then the children played charades and bagged up some chestnuts to take home. All too soon the mums and dads arrived and it was time to say 'goodbye'. Happy Hallowe'en everyone and come back soon!

A top team of Hazelhutters arrived today to take part in some Hallowe'en fun. Despite being a week early, they were happy to get into the spirit of all the spooky activities we had planned. Like all the best days at the Hazelhut, we started with a walk in the woods and by saying 'Hello' to the animals. We found mushrooms...... ....and a huge worm! We also gathered lots and lots of chestnuts..... ..... and picked some vegetables from the garden. As usual, lunch was very popular! All good Hazelhutters made sure their homework was done before they began some art room fun. We made lanterns using old pesto jars. Some of the photos were scarier than the lanterns! We also baked some severed fingers - YUK! Next came a very convincing scary story with props, which had even the toughest Hazelhutters trembling - luckily it was all just a joke! Next we had a quiz and then it was pizza time. Now everyone is snuggled up in front of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'...... What creepy treats will tomorrow bring?!!
The children from CORE school in Rome came to the Hazelhut to learn more about native American culture and especially totem poles. They listened to a story about 2 clever twins who found their way back to the village by using their senses. Then we all went into the woods to see what we could find out about ourselves. Autumn has come to the Hazelhut and there was so much to look at - fallen leaves, chestnuts, mushrooms, fruits and of course the chickens and rabbits needed a visit too! The children enjoyed an outdoor snack and play. Then they started work on their own totems in the art room. The weather was so nice that we had lunch outside, supplemented by some roasted chestnuts from the forest! In the afternoon the children chose an animal which represented their character and made a section of a totem in that form. Many chose birds, but we also had a butterfly, a wolf, an elephant, mice and a fox! When everyone had finished, we went back to the dining room to reflect on the work. Each child made a small presentation about their animal and then it was time to say goodbye. We loved having these well behaved and hard working students back at the Hazelhut. Come back soon!
The sun was shining again this morning, so once the children had packed and done their homework, we went out to play. They used sticks and rocks and climbed in the trees. Some went off exploring, while others stayed close to home. Some children played sports, others enjoyed singing songs. Everyone enjoyed snack time. Then we had chicken, potatoes and cabbage from the garden for lunch. It was very tasty! After lunch the children made jigsaws to take home. They all drew pictures of their favourite part of the weekend. We were sorry to say goodbye to all our young Hazelhutters and hope to see you again soon!
We are so happy that another little Hazelhutter has chosen to have her special celebration with us. We are now proudly hosting 12 children on a special birthday activity weekend. The children have enjoyed some autumn sunshine and seasonal activities as well as lots of birthday treats! The treehouse has been popular and everyone has also enjoyed climbing into nearby branches. We have been getting crafty with necklaces, bracelets, earrings and paper chains. The animals have been very cuddly! We have played lots of fun games and listened to each others stories. We had a wonderful bonfire! We have eaten lasagne, grapes, salad, pizza, bananas, biscuits and of course a very delicious birthday cake!!!
