Another week concluded at the Hazelhut with 3 more visitors from Rome, so we were 11 children as we headed into Ronciglione! So off we headed into town. When we arrived, we had a snack and a cool down in a local bar. Then it was time to shop 'til we dropped! Before lunch we drew some postcards for our families, then tucked in to Marilena's fabulous cuisine. The children were so keen to jump in the pool that they skipped desert and raced back to the Hazelhut, where they swam, played games, did puzzles and made things in the art room until it was time for the leaving ceremony.... Our sports day winner was announced..... And certificates were handed out....... The girls won the bedroom competition and... .....one brave boy awoke from his sick bed to receive his reward. Goodbye Hazelhutters!!!

Hi ho!!!! We headed into the great outdoors after breakfast today, with yet another new Hazelhutter on board! The walk was long, but very beautiful and full of flowers, butterflies, mushrooms and many other interesting things to look at. We stopped for snacks and some lunch, which the children had prepared. There was time to play a game or two and we even found an observation hut to play in. But mostly we just walked and talked and enjoyed the scenery! When we returned to the Hazelhut, everyone was ready for a dip in the pool before we headed to the art room to make some decorations for our 'PIZZA PARTY!' Once again the children cooked some amazing pizze! They ate it all and polished off the ice cream!
It was a rainy morning when we woke up, perfect for some indoor art work. Two new girls joined us and we designed and decorated flags together. Then we had a delicious snack and the sun came out! Then the girls all got together to bake a fresh cherry cake, but all they really wanted to do was eat the ingredients! Then the children got musical and some even dared to sing a karaoke tune or two! For lunch we had the potatoes which the children dug up yesterday and pasta al pomodoro, plus, of course, warm cherry cake! Thumbs up to everything! In the afternoon we played 'Up Jenkins!', 'Wink Swap' and various other games. It was hot enough to swim by 3pm and some of the children ventured into the woods to hunt for wild boar later! Then we lit the camp fire for burgers, hot dogs and the infamous chocolate bananas!!! What a day!
Yesterday the Hazelhutters headed off for their weekly visit to Equitrek, where they groomed and dressed the ponies and then did many different things - such as an obstacle course, a trotting length, mounting and dismounting at speed and much more besides. Next we headed up to our favourite lunch spot for a delicious feed! When they returned to the Hazelhut, the children headed off on a scavenger hunt in the garden. They had 10 items to find in order to be given a clue to unlock the location of the treasure! Later the children helped in the garden, planting onions, digging up potatoes and picking chard. We ate the chard for dinner with our delicious chicken and potatoes.
Today 2 new Hazelhutters joined our group and what great girls they are! This is turning into a super week. All the children were very active for our sports day, playing many new and fun games and showing off their skills. The children made their own sandwiches for lunch, then we headed into the woods for a picnic! After a good rest and some free time, the children were ready for the pool sports. These included diving for hoops, holding breath, swimming a length at high speed and throwing hoops into a big hoop...... We have some excellent swimmers in this group! Later in the afternoon, the children helped with some chores like cleaning the fish tank! Everyone was very excited about ordering their own pizza for dinner - YUM! We think this smile tells the story of today (and the photo was taken by one of the children!)
It was great to welcome all the Hazelhutters today. They have settled in very well and are a polite, thoughtful and open-minded group..... so far! We made sure everyone had a drinking cup of their own for the week. Then the children were desperate to jump into the pool. The children enjoyed their snack of delicious local peaches and pizza bianca, then raced off to enjoy some free time in the grounds. Next we made some peg characters to help organise our papers. Before a dinner of lasagne, salad and yogurt, the children sang songs and played games with James. Now they are settled ready for bed in front of the 'Chronicles of Narnia'.
Today the was the last day of the first Hazelhut camp this summer. Nonetheless, the Hazelhutters were enthusiastic as they set off for a day in town! After a short walk (compared to yesterday) we enjoyed some refreshment at the bar while we discussed the 'Great Ronciglione Scavenger Hunt'. The Hazelhutters had to find the answers to 9 questions based on what they observed in the Medieval old town of Ronciglione. Did you read that sign?! Then it was time for shopping, which the boys and girls did separately. Guess who got to lunch first? After an exhausting time spending their hard earned pocket money it was time for the grand 'End of Week Lunch'. Back at the Hazelhut there was time for a quick dip before the prize giving ceremony. Well done to all the Hazelhutters for their enthusiasm, hard work, fun and kindness. Goodbye, Hazelhutters! We'll see you all again soon.
Today the Hazelhutters got up and prepared themselves for a hike up Monte Venere to find the 'Pozzo del Diavolo'. Our first stop was for a snack on a broken log. Next we mixed up the boys and girls for a competition - who could design the most interesting dream home from what they found around the forest floor? They were all VERY cooperative, clearly some progress has been made this week! The walk was pretty steep and tough going at times, so we had another short stop before lunch. Finally we made it to our destination! But only James dared to go into the devil's domain. We had our sandwiches by the summit and then started to head back down the hill. Everyone was ready for pizza night when we got back and 2 of the boys were quick to offer their services as bakers. While the adults had thousands of visciole to stone! Finally it was time for the pizza party to begin. Everyone tried making a pizza and they were all very tasty - we know because we shared with each other! As the light faded, the children enjoyed some ice-cream and then some of them went for a late night dip in the pool! We can't believe how fast the time has flown, are you really leaving us tomorrow, Hazelhutters?
Today was the day when the Hazelhutters practiced their arts and crafts. This began with gathering wild cherries to make a delicious jam. We held a competition to see who could gather the most cherries in the time we had before it rained. In the end everyone was rewarded because they had all tried very hard. Then we guessed the weight of what we collected - over 6 kilos!!!! Our next activity was to design a T-shirt and sew on a Hazelhut badge using the sewing machine. Before lunch some of the boys helped to make a banana cake: they were exceptional cooks and we will be sharing their cake with the other family members on Friday! In the afternoon, it was the girls turn to make some very tasty burgers for our dinner. In the afternoon we went all musical, learning a new Hazelhut song and listening to each other sing our favourite songs. Two of the children even spent their free time doing arty things: Wow! We finished the day eating those tasty burgers and a very delicious tira mi sù brought in by one of the children's mums - Thank you, Mariangela!
2 new boys joined the camp today and they are already amazing Hazelhutters! All the children loved our day of horse riding at the 'Equitrek Centre'. Some overcame fears...... Others overcame obstacles..... Others rode bare-back..... Some trotted..... All groomed...... But one managed to canter!!!! As usual all the Hazelhutters were super hungry and ready for lunch after all that exertion...... Luckily there was plenty of delicious food at the agriturismo; and an amazing view! After a short walk, we headed back to the Hazelhut. And everyone jumped in the pool! The kids enjoyed some free time before dinner - roast chicken and potatoes and now they are quietly watching 'Ratatouille': peace at last!
