All too soon it was time to say 'Goodbye' to another group of Hazelhutters........ Once their rooms were tidied and inspected, we headed into Ronciglione on yet another hot and sunny day! There was time for a photo at the fountain and a snack at the bar. Then it was full speed ahead to the shops! One group was much more enthusiastic about the shops than the other, whose main focus was LUNCH! Once again Marilena had prepared tons of delicious food for us! Afterwards the children enjoyed playing with their purchases and the cutlery..... ...before we headed home. After a much anticipated game of 'Splat!', it was time for our final meeting and to award the Sports prizes: The best room prize: And of course the certificates! Thanks for being such a great group and thanks to Jacqueline for helping us all week to make this a top Hazelhutting experience!

The Hazelhutters headed back to the forest this week, for more fun and games in nature - there were dead trees to explore.... ..... mushrooms to spot..... Brambles to eat! Then back to base for a tasty barbeque lunch. Back at the Hazelhut, some kids had a dip in the pool, while others made musical instruments and party decorations. Everyone was very excited to start the pizza party...... As usual the pizzas were delicious! Then the children partied into their last night - we can't believe these amazing kids leave us tomorrow!!!!
At almost 40 degrees celcius, this was the perfect day to spend in the art room! The children were especially creative with their sewing and design ideas this week. Their designs took them right up to lunch time! After lunch they enjoyed some free time. After a swim there was a sudden change in the weather, with super strong winds sweeping through the Hazelhut grounds; we all took cover indoors for some drama time! The first game was 'Queen Victoria'. The next game was 'Charades', at which point we had a number of power cuts! Finally we played freeze tapping: can you guess which films these 2 scenes are from? In the evening the children lit a beautiful camp fire. Everyone enjoyed hanging out by the fire and eating home-made burgers and hot dogs...... Followed by.... TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS!
Today the Hazelhutters went to a beautiful pony-riding trip. There were wonderful ladies that helped the kids ride and clean the horses. There were four ponies: Misty, Adelina, Bartali, Dolce Nera. The kids went to the carello and prepared an obstacle course, and after that the kids started riding the ponies. Towards the end of the horse riding a small and funny accident happened: a girl was riding the small and white pony, Adelina, when suddenly it lay on it’s tummy and started rolling on the ground; luckily the girl pounced off like a funny looking cricket before it rolled. After that the Hazelhutters took the very sweaty ponies for a refreshing wash. Then we all went to the “Giardini of Ararat” to have lunch they had a beautiful antipasto including: bread, tomato bruschetta, and ham with melon. The first dish was pasta with zucchini and zaferano sauce; for dessert cake. When we came back to the Hazelhut the kids had some free time and after we went to the pool to cool down after that long morning. Then they had other free time and a snack. During the free time some kids cooked biscuits with Ms. Ottavia while other kids sang with Mr. James. The kids had free time and soon after that it was dinner time, at dinner we had: chicken, roast potatoes, and one cookie each. When dinner finished we had the room inspection, got into our pj’s, watched Indiana Jones and went to bed. Today's blog was written by E.P and J.S! Our sports day kicked off with skipping. Then moved to a team sport - water races. Then we moved indoors for the billiard ball target game. Then it was back out into the hot sun for volleys at the net - phew! The final sport before lunch was archery. Great to play and great to watch! These independent Hazelhutters made their own sandwiches and then we headed out into the woods for some lunch. It was lovely to sit in the shade and have a nice rest after all that action! In the afternoon the children could hardly wait to get in the pool for the water games! In the afternoon, the boys played games in their free time and the girls made friendship bracelets. Then it was time for the great outdoor scavenger hunt for treasure! The children enjoyed tasty pizza for dinner and then more outdoor fun before they came in for a favourite DVD - 'Drop Dead Fred'.
Another Sunday and another welcome - this time to 11 kids and a new helper! Since most of the children were arriving from 35+ degree heat, they couldn't wait to get in the pool for a cool down and some fun! After a swim our new Hazelhutters where ready for a tasty snack. Then they spent some time in the art room designing room signs for the dormitories. We all enjoyed a breezy dinner on the terrace of delicious lasagne and salad. Then the children phoned home and enjoyed playing outside with the punch bag - tough or what?!
Despite the soaring temperatures, the adventurous Hazelhutters headed into town as usual. The first stop was a cool down at the bar. Some kids visited the church. Then we began the old town scavenger hunt. Both the teams got full marks! Since it was such a hot day, no one was very interested in the shops.... so we headed straight to lunch. After lunch we played games in the air conditioned room. Then it was time to head back to the Hazelhut for our farewell meeting. All the children became qualified Hazelhutters..... and these 3 won best room!
The Hazelhutters were treated to a grand day out yesterday and we got back so late that we couldn't even do the blog! We started in the fagetta, where we looked at the trees and also bumped into the researchers we met last week from Viterbo University. Some kids tried to walk 'blind' using only their other senses to guide them. We saw lots of interesting things...... Then it was time for a tasty barbeque lunch. Sausage rolls all round! After lunch we took the children to 'Lago di Vico', where we rented pedallos and headed off on a watery adventure! There was time for an ice cream in Ronciglione before heading back to the Hazelhut. When we got back, there was time to relax and prepare for the evening at 'Parco dei Cimini'. There was so much to enjoy at 'Parco dei Cimini' - animals, 4 different birds of prey, dinner (of course!) and even a look at the stars in the planitarium! We got back super late, so sorry for not phoning home and thank you so much to Stefano and Simona for a wonderful evening!!!
What a fun day at the Hazelhut! We welcomed back five members of one of our most loyal Hazelhut families. The children were divided into groups and one group picked herbs to dry and give to their parents... While another group made jewelry in the art room. After a tasty snack, we swapped the groups over. Then before lunch some of the children helped in the vegetable garden..... While others just enjoyed having new friends to play with! We ate lots of home grown foods for lunch: what a lot of kids around the table! After lunch there was time to play a Hazelhut favourite: 'Up Jenkins!' In the afternoon a swim was needed to cool down from these super hot temperatures! Then we had a game of 'Splat!' before we had to say goodbye to our friends. In the evening some of the children went to check up on the animals - our chickens have stopped laying eggs! Maybe the hot weather is getting to them too..... Later they used the flint and steel to light a camp fire. Then we sang songs and we ate burgers, hot dogs and marshmallows in the cool of the evening!
We drove to the 'Giardini di Ararat' and then walked down the hill to 'Equitrek' this morning. The staff at 'Equitrek' were very pleased with the ability and attention of this week's riders. Once again it was a roasting hot day and the ponies needed a good shower after their workout! Today there was even time to clean and grease their hooves. As usual the kids couldn't wait until lunch time and as usual it was fantastic! The children all enjoyed playing 'Chinese Whispers' between courses and there were many laughs around the table. (This lasted until dinner time!) When we got back to the Hazelhut there was time for a swim and to kick a ball around before snack time when we announced the winners of the Hazelhut sports day, and here is the winner: The kids had free time and did some jobs, then we said goodbye to 2 Hazelhutters and welcomed a new one! Here is the scene at the Hazelhut right now!
