Celebrating our traditions and beliefs with Grade 2

We had a fantastic day yesterday with the Grade 2 class from St. Thomas's International School.  They came to the Hazelhut to learn more about traditions and beliefs.  So we went on a walk to see if the children could spot some of the underlying beliefs at the Hazelhut.  In the vegetable garden, they saw that we grow our own food organically and from seed.

They also spotted our bug hotel, which encourages natural pest control and helps little creatures find a home.

The students could see that we believe in caring for animals.

James explained that the animal food is organic and if they need medicine we use plants to cure them.

Even if our animals die, we still believe in showing them respect - this is Pingpong's grave.

Later the students made traditional Scottish biscuits called shortbread.  The 30th of November was St. Andrew's day, he is the patron Saint of Scotland, the country where James and Ottavia were born.  We used our own hazelnuts, organic butter and wholemeal flour to make the recipe more tasty and more healthy.

All the children believe in being kind and sharing things, so at the end of the day they divided the biscuits evenly and put their share in a bag for their families and friends.

The children had a vote at lunch time and all decided they wanted to eat outside.

Then they enjoyed lots of free play and learned to take risks and try new things - even more underlying beliefs of the Hazelhut!

After lunch we went to the art room and the students each made a panel for a light box.  Their design showed some of the things they believe in.  The light at the end shone very brightly!

Well done for your caring positive attitude Grade 2.  You are welcome back any time!
