The Grade 1 class from St Thomas's came to the Hazelhut today to find out about habitats and homes. They arrived full of excitement at 9am. Many of the children had been to the Hazelhut before and they were very impressed with all the changes - especially the new games area! We started off with a game to get to know this great class a bit better. Then we went to meet the animals: first Theo the goldfish! Then we inspected the insect hotel and the new wild bird area. The children were really good at asking questions but after a while we all had itchy feet and went for a lovely walk in the forest, looking out for animal and bird homes on the way. Next it was time to visit Smokey and Fluffy, the rabbits. The children loved them and were so gentle with them - they gave them shoots to eat and brushed their hair. We looked at the chicken coop and the 7 hens. Some children discovered their eggs. After all this discovery, the children were very excited about... LUNCH! In the afternoon we all went to the art room and helped the children realise their own ideas making an animal home. They were super creative! Before their parents arrived, we listened to each child talk about the habitat they had created and to explain what they had learned during the day. We were very impressed with this curious and creative group of children and we hope you all return soon!
