Healthy Habits with Grade 1

It was a delight to welcome the grade 1 class from St Thomas's school to the Hazelhut.  11 children came to learn about how we keep children healthy during our camps at the Hazelhut.  Despite the weather, the children had a great time using the house and grounds.

They looked all over the house for clues as to how we ensure children at the Hazelhut eat healthily, exercise, rest and keep clean, then they made notes on their worksheets.

After a healthy snack, the weather cleared up just enough for an outdoor play.

Next we headed to the vegetable garden to find the vegetables growing at this time of year.  The children learned that certain foods grow at certain times of the year because they provide the nutrients our bodies need most at that time of year.  Did you know that cabbages can help you have healthy lungs and that fennel is good for eyesight?

The children tried some of the vegetables growing at the Hazelhut during our lunch break.  Then we headed into the grounds to find out what else is growing at this time of year and why.

We found many energy rich nuts, fruits high in vitamin C, liver cleansing mushrooms and of course starchy filling chestnuts, which we roasted back at the Hazelhut.  The children enjoyed trying them while they listened to a story.  Then we all said 'Goodbye!'.  We really hope you come back soon!
